Discover how psychometry works and its practical uses. Learn how to develop psychometry, which most people find is the easiest extrasensory ability to learn.

In 1893, Joseph Rodes Buchanan coined the term, “psychometry” to refer to the procedure in which practitioners hold an object in their hands to obtain psychic information about its owner.

The term has been replaced by the psychic touch and token-object reading because of the confusion by it being used in conjunction with the psychological term, “psychometrics,” the study involving theories and techniques of psychological and educational measurement.

The Operating Principle of Psychometry

When people own an object or live in a place, they subconsciously imprint the site or object with their energy. The object or place retains the individual's energy; this energy can be detected and interpreted by another person. If an object or place has been in a family for a generation or more, the energy is likened to a family gestalt that can also be read.

Strong emotions can also be imprinted on objects that the person doesn’t own and in places where the individual hasn’t lived. The emotions are there, like a videotape, and can be picked up by others’ subconscious in the forms of thoughts, emotions, images and words.

Psychometry and Applied Psi, Psychic Phenomena

Applied Psi is using psychic abilities in various traditional fields. Some law enforcement agencies use psychics to locate missing people and solve crimes.

In a missing person's case, it’s the object that’s used for the basis of the reading. In murder cases, both objects and the crime scene are read. Archaeologists employ psychics to obtain information from excavations. When investigating hauntings, parapsychologists will seek the help of psychics experienced in psychometry; they receive impressions of the location associated with the haunting.

How to Develop Psychometry

There are ways to develop one's psychometry abilities. This can be achieved by gathering a group of like-minded people together in a place where there are no distractions. Each person should have a pen or pencil and paper to record the readings.

Each person decides what his or her object will be used and places it on a central table. The chosen objects should be owned only by the person offering it, such as jewelry or a key ring. Antiques that have been owned by more than one person should be avoided for use in psychometry exercises, because antiques contain the energy of multiple people.

To hone psychometry skills, relax, keep an open mind, concentrate and attune to the object. Next, write down initial impressions, including emotions and physical responses. Don’t try to process them immediately. Allow impressions to flow; don’t try to force them. If there are too many initial perceptions, don’t respond immediately. Allow them to become clearer. If an impression makes no sense, record it because the meaning usually becomes clearer with time.

When all impressions are recorded, each person participating in the exercise will express his or her impressions and the object’s owner will be asked to confirm or deny it. It's important to maintain a good attitude and one shouldn't be upset if most or all impressions are incorrect. Inaccuracy is not uncommon when first starting out and as people continue to develop psychometry, the impressions will become clearer and more accurate. Repeat the exercise is key to developing this skill.

Warning on Telephone Psychics Using Psychometry

There are numerous “psychic” websites offering readings with telepsychics touting their abilities. Some claim they will give a reading using psychometry. This when red flares, sirens and bells should shout, “Warning!"

Psychometry involves reading an object or a place, so it's impossible for a telepsychic to read a place without being there or to read an object without access to the item. Remote Viewing (RV) is the term for the ability of gathering information from a distance using extrasensory perception.

Do these “psychics” offering to read an object request the querant, person requesting a reading, send them a personal object, then call back in a week or do they give a psychometry reading immediately? In either case, end the telephone connection. It’s doubtful that a wannabes would go to the trouble of requesting an object being sent, then returning it to the querant, but they will “read” an object they don’t physically have.
