Can Dreams Really Predict the Future?

Ever had a dream that seemed to come true? Explore the science of precognitive dreaming and learn techniques on how to tap into your psychic abilities.

Prophetic dreams have been recorded throughout history, some by famous names such as Tuthmosis IV, an Egyptian Pharaoh; President Abraham Lincoln; and Edgar Cayce, "The Sleeping Prophet." Can dreams really predict the future? History and science have proved that the ability to sense or glimpse the future does exist, but they have yet to discover the how and why.

The Brain and Precognition

One of the problems science has encountered in trying to find proof that precognitive ability truly exists, is that in order to predict the future, one must somehow defy the concept of linear time. Albert Einstein theorized that the past, present, and future are all an illusion.

To understand this, one must also understand how the human brain works. The conscious mind seeks to compartmentalize information in a never-ending quest to have things in their nice, neat place. The subconscious mind, however, realizes that there are no boundaries, and reaches past the illusion of confinement and time.

Brain scans show that premonitions manifest from the portion of the brain that controls emotions. In someone more developed, the visual cortex may also become engaged and a person can receive more details of the vision. Recent studies have shown that creative individuals display higher accuracy rates in precognitive tests.

Frequency and Resonance

Some humans and animals are able to sense an earthquake before it happens. Scientists believe that the shifting of the Earth’s plates creates a frequency that the brain may sometimes be able to detect. The Earth normally resonates at a frequency of about 7.83 hertz. Someone in tune with the frequency could sense a disruption.

It’s the frequency theory that may hold the key. During sleep, the subconscious, now free of the clutter of an active mind, can harness the emotional and intuitive portions of the brain and "tune in" to other frequencies. Could time have a frequency as well?

According to an article in Time: Exploring the Unexplained, studies suggest that people who regularly participate in mental disciplines such as meditation and yoga, also score highly on precognitive tests, much like the creative group mentioned earlier. Learning to free the mind of ‘noise’ seems to be a large part of harmonizing the psychic frequencies.

Psychic Dreams

So why do precognitive dreams happen? Perhaps it is part of the survival mechanism that seeks to warn of events yet to occur. There are many accounts of people making last-minute travel changes due to a warning received in a dream, but there are also accounts of dreams foretelling unavoidable accidents as well.

Can precognitive dreams be triggered? Perhaps, through the practice of lucid dreaming, they can. Lucid dreaming is a technique where the dreamer is aware that they are in a dream. Once aware, it may be possible to control the direction of information within the dream.

So how can one tell if a dream is ordinary or extraordinary? Repetitive dreams, extremely detailed dreams, or sometimes the visualizations of a clock or calendar within the dream have been reported by persons who have had precognitive dreams.

How can you have one? Keep a dream journal and record vivid or startling dreams that you may have. Pay particular attention to your feelings as you go over the details. Try to pin down any clues that may determine when a dream is precognitive in nature. And get plenty of sleep.

I had a dream that it was going to happen and it sure did just like it happened and other things such as seeing spirits, hearing things and persiving things before they happen and of course dreaming things before they actually happen.I would like friends out there that understand what it is that I'm going through. Please I would like it very much If anyone out there would email me and let me know what they think about this and ways that I can further develope my gift.

I dream dreams.......... I know that the dreams will happen, when I wake up they are vivid and real... I can tell if the dream is just simply that, or if it is real... I have been doing this since childhood.... Unfortuanltely, I only see the things taht will make my life more difficult, rather that the happy things that are to come... Only once did I see the good.... I wish I saw that more often, and not just the troubling. I thought it was crazy, and did not tell anyone, but, finally I started just telling hubby what I dreamed, then, pretty soon, he caught on.... Didn't want him to think I was weird, so I let him find it himself.... Also, my mom dreams too... Wonder if it is passed down??? My 5 year old daughter has been telling me about her dreams also.... She dreams something, and low and behold, it is true... Just like when I was a child...

Good day, let's see.........where to begin? So my stepbrother taught myself and his brother "how to fly in your dream" when we were kids. Of course the instruction was quite simply to tell yourself, "I'm dreaming!" during one's dream. That was a long time ago. Somewhere in my mid 20's, I began to notice a direct correlation between real events, objects, ideas and scenarios that crossed my path the morning/day after having just previously dreamed of said. Well, just the year before a co-worker had introduced me to horse track wagering.......naturally.....My first preliminary "dry-fire" tests produced an amazing 6 out of 6 correct picks across the next several months. The 7th was completely wrong, but I hadn't gone to the track yet. I was only checking the local newspaper sports page race card line-up, and then circling my pick. I determined my target to be : Winner at 10/1 odds or better. That was the pre-sleep auto-suggestion that I gave after relaxing my body, quieting my mind, and then just going to sleep. OF COURSE, dreaming with intent is greatly facilitated by keeping a dream journal. Unfortunately, by the time that I actually had cash to implement my evil plan, my beginner's luck and newfound oneiromancy ability had run out of gas. However, about 1991 I had the supreme good fortune to move to Chicago for half a year. I was living 15 minutes (curb to curb) from Arlington International Racecourse! Since I did IN FACT cash several winning tickets (always aiming for trifectas and exactas now), by technical definition that makes me a professional. Unfortunately, I wasn't born with any inner discipline and quickly spent the money. Mostly on beer, dinners, cabs, etc. though many wrong interpretations of dreams, near misses and dead wrong wagers, and ran out of stake. Churchill Downs was good for a few free rides when I lived in KY. Thought I was completely unique (and consequently alone) until in 2003 when I Googled up an article about a John Godley (British chap) who had an amazing series of very accurate precognitive horse race dreams. Also found a book by J.W. Dunne, An Experiment with Time , @ 1927. "What one man can do, another man CAN do!" Too bad MO doesn"t have internet wagering......cptslacker, out!

Let's see, where was I? Oh yeah, recommended readings: An obscure book by the Marquis de Herve de St. Denys (probably misspelled that) Dreams and How to Guide Them. Not very lengthy, excellent analysis and instruction. Long before the term - "Lucid Dreaming", the author called cognizant awareness during a dream - "I was aware of my true situation". Seems I recall mention that Sigmund Freud was "Unable to obtain a copy". How suspiciously convenient for him to not have to defend his own convoluted theories about the fundamental nature of dreams. I have personally corroborated most of the author's extensive experience working with dreams. Hard to find the book (out of print since @ 1980), more than worth the effort! And again, so is the book by J.W. Dunne, An Experiment With Time. Many parts are difficult to read when the author (an engineer) spends pages on complex physics theories and Venn diagrams to explain what, in his own experience he calls, "a regression in time". That is: when one has a dream of an event BEFORE the event happens. However, he was able to create a formal experiment wherein he showed that fairly anyone can be trained to have at least some success at dreaming of something out of time sequence. Especially, the author took care to disregard from test scores what is now called "tolerance of ambiguity".

Hi Leticia. I have had a few experiences similar to what you mentioned - seeing a future event, but that came after consciously directing my subjective mind for a specific dream (auto-suggestion). Clarevoyance and clareaudience are faculties of the human mind. I would love to communicate with you and share our knowledge.
Please leave your email add.
Thanks

Richard Ackerman, wow, i testify to everything you said. Just last weekend i used pre-sleep auto suggestion, wanting to know the results of 4 football matches being played (not scores, just win-draw-lose for each team). I had a very vivid dream in which someone was revealing the results to me, three of the teams won, and one drew. It happened exactly like that last weekend, in the English Premier League. Arsenal won, Liverpool won, Man United won, and Chelsea drew!!
I used to misinterpret many dreams too, but now i include in my suggestion that when the answer comes i will know it undoubtably, as in the dream i mentioned above. If it's not clear, then i don't take it as an answer. I don't bet though, but it wouldn't hurt on one of those 80/1 scorecasts!!
Thanks anyway for the recommended reading.....

My name is jessica and I am 19 years old. Over the past couple years I have had weird experiences with dreams. The first one being when I was about 15 a good friend of mine ran away from home for about a month and I had been really worried about him because no one knew where he was. Then one night I had a dream he came to see me, and he gave me a hug and the hug felt real. The next day he returned home. This has happened several times with him since.
Another time I had a dream that a couple friends of mine were running around my school looking for something. The next day when I went to school, one of my friends who had been in the dream came up to me and was like "oh man, last night I had this weird dream that you were in." Then proceeded to tell me about the same exact dream I had.
The most recent one though, was about a week before I was planning on going to a concert I was really excited for. In my dream my one friend richie showed up at the concert with short hair, and we ended up going to some persons house I had never met before to hang out.
The next morning I was telling my friend about the dream I had, and he said the second he read what I had wrote he got chills. Apparently while I was having my dream, in a city a couple hours away from where I was my friend richie was telling my other friend that he wanted to cut his hair really short for the concert[he had long hair at the time] and a friend of my friend had told him that night that we could hang out at his apartment until the train started running in the morning.
For the most part I shrug these off as funny coincidences, but I still can't help being weirded out and wondering at what point does it stop just being a coincidence?

There is no such thing as coincidences my dear. I will leave out all technical details as to how and why, besides you can find all that on the net, but instead of wanting it to stop, why don't you revel in it!! Now you should try directing your dreams and ask questions etc. Best wishes to you....

Hi guys! My name is Mia and I'm 15. Yeah, I know that I'm a little on the young side but I do have precognitive dreams... and sometimes I see things even when I'm awake. I.E. I always seem to grab my cellphone right before it rings or I get a text message. I've had quite a few dreams about the future. It's always little things like someone I haven't seen in a while showing up or a slight change in school plans or something like that. But I want to know more about my abilities... can anyone help?

So, I've been interested in dream interpretation - symbolism and what not for years. However, I never paid too much attention to my dreams regarding premonitions. I recently became pregnant and my dreams became short and distinct. I knew 100%, from my dreams, early on that I was having a boy. I told all who would listen. I am having a boy. I was convinced that my sister-in-law was having a girl (they wanted to be suprised). Last night I had a dream that she had a boy. I called my brother, left a message. Tonight, she gave birth to a boy. Now, I realize that I have a 50/50 chance on this, but I would have put money on it as the feelings left no doubts in my mind. Both of my father's grandmothers claimed to be psychic.

Are premonitions psychic impressions of future events, or, could they be the sum of our subconscious evaluations based on intuition and stored information?

I am currently trying to develop an accuracy scale for precognition and attempting to locate a possible mechanism for the events recorded. The scale runs from 1 to 5, with 1 being a 'feeling' about something, and 5 being 'like watching a video before it was shot'. Having had several level 5 events (for one of which I have documented evidence), I am naturally interested in the subject, and would be very interested in a possible mechanism for them. At present, the events are uncontrolled and random, and there is no way to distinguish an event until the actual event occurs. Remembering the future is a difficult subject to explain, let alone to find a mechanism for.
I would be very grateful if anyone who leaves a future message would rank the accuracy of their predictions from 1 to 5 and explain why they chose that rank.

I recently had what can only be described as a level 5 dream. As in like watching a video. This has never happened to me before. The dream involved a certain person performing certain unusual actions, details of a conversation with that person and the location/venue. This wasn't anything particularly important or life threatening to anyone, however it has changed me from a highly sceptical person into someone a little freaked out. Contact with some one such as F Ivatt, or anyone who is not a fraud/weirdo would be welcome. Anon

On the morning of 03-09-09 I woke after a very vivid dream, not the first time i have had one. My dream was that I had played a number on the ohio lottery pick 4, And had won, but I knew that I had only won on a any-order type ($400) instead of exact-order type ($5000). I told my wife and 4 co-workers about the dream and the number I won on:1215 , They all listened and one of the 5 people played the number that night, I played the number for the week, changing the order of the numbers each day. On the evening of 03-12-09 the ohio winning number was 5211....I did win! not exact-order. Is there a special type of Precognition dreams for numbers? I have always loved working with numbers and statistics and have spent many hours on lottery computer programs. Could my brain be extra receptive to freq's with math involved? can I tune/prep myself for better numbers reception?

Hello My name is daaniel and i am 14 years old I had a dream a few days ago and it was so vivid and real. It was about three meteors or comets or astriods about to collide with earth and there will be tiny showers hitting earth and my family will die but i will be the only person to survive on my street. I am afraid because i belive that this is tied to 12/21/2012. I am not sure what to do or should i go to a psychic or tell my parents. I also specifically remember a dream when i was in either the 1st or 2nd grade. My dream was about me cutting out a picture of a Nutcracker soldier and it happened 1 or 2 days later. I am only thinking of these dreams now an i Dont know if i need help or what but can someone tell what to do.

No, this isn't a trailer for HEROES. LOL. Go back and read the instructions, i.e. the book by J.W. Dunne - An Experiment with Time. It's kinda techy at times, but mostly accurate assessment. Oh, and to the confused youngster, yeah, nobody likes to think of themselves as a freak.

hey i'm paul. i'm 14 and i can see the future in my dreams. usually there is no volume but recently i have started hearing background noises. i don't know when i relized my talent. i am trying to learn to control it but i don't know how. also the dreams are usually in black and white. during the dream its like im there, at that time but when i wake up i don't remember the dream until it happens. when they happened i used to get a sense of dejavu, but now that does not happen and i must remember the dream by myself. the dreams are never anything important, just random moments in my future. these dreams seem to happen randomly but i'm not sure if that is truly the case. since i don't remember the dreams until they happen i have not found a way to catalouge the dreams. i only dream things that happen to me. i have nevr dreamt something that will happen to another. send your questions about my ability to pgd5000@yahoo.com. i will do my best to answer them.

Hi I just came accross this site. basically i have always found all of these things very interesting; i'm very much open minded. I too, have know what the sex of my babies were before confirmed by dr. I have dreamed about 1yr prior to my sister, brothers' wives getting pregnant i told them they were having boys or girls. One time in a moment of crisis, I even called my sister on a phone that was disconnected and when everyone in the room looked at me wierd, they told me that there was no service on the phone. I have a fairly amount of dajavu with certain situations. Sometimes i think about a certain person and then the phone rings and it's them. i would like to know how to enhance, and control jm2001pta@yahoo.com

Does anyone know how to tell the difference between a precognitive dream and just a typical dream with your subconscious talking to you? I have had 3 dreams the last 3 months which did come true (or I was able to avoid having them come true. They weren't exact like a deja vu but it was definitely a tale of the future). A few nights ago I had a dream that was extremely vivid.... I was honestly SHOCKED when I woke up because I didn't think it was a dream (many times I just simple wake from a dream... its no problem... but this seemed way too real). And then of course I was depressed because it was a fantastic outcome to a situation I've been struggling with. =P But has anyone found a way to tell the difference?

Ok here goes... my names Keith ive had so many different things iv seen and experienced. I guess the earliest i can remember anything happening was when i was 9. Though a lot of my child hood has blank spots. Though since i was around 17 and 18 is when the strongest things started. Im now 29 so been a good ten years going with everything.
I have prerogative abilities i know that. The way it seems to go with me is i dream things then it could be 2 days or 10 years later till then pop back out. You see then come i dreams but not in points where i can write them down when i wake. Instead at about 3 minutes to 15 seconds before i remember the dream and what day i had them. i see everything that is to happen what i am to think before hand, and what others will do or say. The way i explain it is like your reading a book and watching tv at the same time. to events going on at once. I have no power over it, it comes a goes. Some times ill get them all the time and others now for almost a year.
Now here lately ive been doing something i havent since i was a child, my mom said she us to ketch me staring off into space for 2 to 10 minutes at a time. I didnt remember them. Its a like a blank time in my memory, i dont ever realize what is going on. Well ive been doing them again, havnt done them since i was a child. I dont know if its related, and the things i see make me feel like im going crazy.
So i guess with all this im just trying to find others like me, i normally go to my writings and stories i write to try and deal with it but its not helping. So if there are others that might be able to help or understand what i mean and maybe feel id love to know.

When I have a precognitive dream, it's a feeling I can't shake off after I wake up. The feeling of foreboding trouble, warning me of impending dangers coming my way. At one time these dreams only dealt with situations in my life, until I dreamed on a national scale, as in my dream of 9-11, four years before it happened. Then there was the dream of a chain of explosions, turning it pitch black or the dream of the red sky on fire. Could these events be in our near future or can we avert them with our collective thoughts and choices we make or will they be a horror for us yet to live?

I've been having precognitive dreams since I was about 6 or 7. They're usually something silly, like my mom and I having a conversation about nothing in particular, or getting ready to go somewhere, then months (or even years) later the dream comes true. The biggest problem I've always had is the time frame. Things never happen within a few weeks of the dream. The shortest span I've seen is about 3 months. The longest was about 4 years. How can I become more attune with the time frame of my precognitive dreams? If anyone has any suggestions or literature to suggest, please e-mail me at blueblazingstar@hotmail.com with "Precognitive Dreams" in the subject line. Thank you!

Hi I’m 37 years old. I had my first dream about a future event when I was 18 but not that I knew it at the time. It was my last night at home before moving away to go to university. I was wondering before I went to sleep where I'd be in ten years and who I'd be married to. That night I dreamt about a Japanese girl with a white face. I remember waking up thinking it was the wrong answer and thought nothing more as I was the typical racist 'japs' type of person (yes ashamedly young stupid and arrogant back then). After uni I got offered a position in Japan and later married a Japanese girl when I was 29. At first I used to think I had dejavu at times, it was an unusual feeling, like 'im sure this has happened'. In my early thirty's I had a dejavu situation again but on this occasion I also remembered the dream Id had about it. I dismissed it at first because I’m quite a science'y type of person but since then its happened too many times to ignore. I was surprised when I searched the net to find people talking about it. Really makes me wonder about the nature of the universe.

my name is monica, im 18 years old and have been having precognitive dreams since i can remember. i tend to dream normal day to day things such as me walking down the street, sitting in classes, talking to friends and even on the bus. every now and then i dream about random things that i never believed i would do and surly enough months later i was doing it. a couple months ago i had such a funny and explict dream over on of my highschool teachers that my friends constantly make fun of and now i cant even look at him the same way.
i also have other gifts such as picking up the phone before it rings, and many times i think about the person before the call me. and when it comes to people im really intune with in a relationship i can tell what they are doing or where they are. an example is when my exbf was attacked at 3 am and i knew it happened. very rarely i can also tell the "future" such as when my mom was scared she would lose her job and i told her that she wouldnt and not only that she would get a raise.
